News Article - Meditation
Take a minute to try this exercise; Sit in a comfortable position and close your eyes gently. (Well, not yet. Wait until you read what to do.) Focus on your breath and notice your lungs expanding with each inhale, and contracting with each exhale. With each inhale, breathe in the word, the thought, and the feeling of peace. With each exhale, breathe out the word thank you, and give gratitude for the peace you just received.
Notice that when you say thank you, you receive more peace. Notice that when you receive more peace, you become more thankful. You can imagine this as a wave of energy that comes in through your head, filling your body, and flows out with your breath, each wave getting larger and stronger than the one before. You can do this for as long as you like. When you open your eyes, notice how you feel.
This was just a small part of the guided meditation offered by Diane Curriden of Valley Alternative Healing on March18. It was offered free of charge to the community, to receive feedback on the script she wrote for a CD she is in process of making, for inner peace.
Participants showed up with mats and pillows to make themselves comfortable on the floor of her home studio in Solvang. She then helped them settle into a meditative state by playing meditative music, and talking them through a relaxation, allowing time for each part of the body to feel a release of tension.
The meditation was about 25 minutes, and took the participants on a journey to their own peaceful place. Because the meditation was inspired by Heart Centered Therapy, each person had their own unique place they visited, and an individual experience. The thing everyone shared, however, was a deep sense of peacefulness, gratefulness, and relaxation. At the end, plenty of time was given to become grounded, open eyes and come back to, what we consider, reality.
A discussion then ensued about what happened during the meditation, and how they felt at the end. The comments were wonderful, and there were reports over the following days of better sleep at night, and lingering effects of peacefulness.
Diane was inspired to make this CD when she heard Dr. Gary Foresman, a “Middle Path Medicine” doctor, give a lecture at Nirvana Hyperbaric Institute. Middle Path Medicine is a combination of eastern and western medicine, for optimal healing. He spoke of an oncologist who uses Tibetan Singing Bowls while patients receive chemotherapy. This inspired Diane to create a guided meditation CD for patients of Nirvana Hyperbaric Institute while they are relaxing in hyperbaric chambers. This will create a synergistic affect for healing.
Of course you don’t need to be in an oxygen chamber to enjoy a guided meditation! According to Dr. Weil, "The benefits of regular meditation are well known - the relaxation response it engenders can result in lower blood pressure, decreased heart and respiratory rates and can even level out mood swings. New research from UCLA suggests that the long-term practice of meditation leads to beneficial brain changes called gyrification, a “folding” of the cerebral cortex, that are believed to promote and enhance the speed at which the brain processes information."
Diane’s CD will have original music by Gary Foshee, local musician and sound studio owner, and will be available to the public by visiting her website, www.valleyalternativehealing.com.
