Biofeedback for the brain
Neurofeedback testimonialsWHAT IS NEUROFEEDBACK?
Neurofeedback is a method of improving brain function by addressing problems of brain disregulation. Disregulation includes the anxiety-depression spectrum, attention difficulties with or without hyperactivity, behavior disorders, sleep disorders, headaches, chronic pain, and emotional disturbances. Neurofeedback is based on electrical activity that occurs naturally in the brain, the electroencephalogram (EEG). It directly trains the brain, which then learns to operate with greater control and stability. The brain is observed in action from moment to moment. Tthat information is shown back to the client, and the brain is rewarded for changing its own activity to more appropriate patterns. Neurofeedback, also called EEG biofeedback, is a gradual process of training in self-regulation. It is simply biofeedback applied directly to the brain. Self regulation is a necessary part of good brain function. Self-regulation training allows the central nervous system to function better. HOW IS THIS DONE? Sensors are applied on the scalp to record brainwave activity. The signal is processed by computer, and information is extracted about certain key brainwave frequencies. We show the ebb and flow of this activity back to the person, who attempts to change the activity level. Some frequencies we wish to promote, others we wish to diminish. We present this information to the client in the form of a video. The client is effectively running the video with his or her brain. Eventually the brainwave activity is shaped toward more desirable, more regulated performance. The targeted frequencies, and the specific locations on the scalp where the brainwaves are recorded, are specific to the conditions being addressed, and specific to the individual. WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM NEUROFEEDBACK? Neurofeedback is a simple technique that can benefit people of all ages. It can help children and adolescents who might struggle in school, assist with anxiety and depression, or with drug and alcohol addictions. Neurofeedback can help the businessman or woman to think more clearly, and can maintain good brain function as we age. Peak performers also use EEG training to enhance their abilities in sports, business and the arts. The variety of symptoms it can effect are so widespread, that it can help anyone to improve on some aspect in their life. Neurofeedback is currently being used for the following conditions:

IS NEUROFEEDBACK RIGHT FOR YOU?
Neurofeedback is very helpful for many people, depending upon the particular problem they want to address. Those who are interested should be aware that it is a form of training that many people consider experimental.
Success with neurofeedback requires a strong commitment from the client. The client must understand the importance of carrying through with the designated number of sessions per week. It is a process, not an event. Some people may not experience the beneficial effects for ten or more sessions. Many conditions will require forty or more sessions.
Preliminary indications have shown that changes seen with neurofeedback appear to be permanent, with booster sessions sometimes being necessary if some type of life experience or use of a substance compromises gains that have been made.
HOW LONG DOES TRAINING TAKE?
EEG training is a learning process, and therefore results are seen gradually over time. For most conditions, some progress can be seen within about ten sessions. Initial training goals may require twenty to forty half hour sessions. More difficult cases may take longer.
HOW FREQUENT SHOULD THE TRAINING SESSIONS BE?
Our first session will involve a consultation, an evaluation of your needs, and a short neurofeedback session if you are so inclined. Please allow 1 ½ hours for this session.
Neurofeedback involves a commitment, as the sessions should be regular and frequent, at two to three times per week.
As we proceed, the benefits tend to become more complete and more permanent, so we may decrease the frequency of sessions as you consolidate and generalize the improvements into your life.
I schedule sessions for an hour, to allow for questions and discussion. It is extremely important that I am aware of the effects felt after each session, so adjustments can be made, if necessary.
POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS?
The small sensors are placed on the scalp with conductive paste which can easily be rinsed off the scalp with warm water or rubbing alcohol. We do not need to cut the hair or shave the head.
The sensors placed on the scalp for neurofeedback, simply measure the electrical pulses that occur naturally in the brain. It is similar to a stethoscope used by doctors to listen to the heart. Nothing is done to the brain . . . except give it information on how it is performing.
Neurofeedback is a healthy alternative to other forms of treatment that are more invasive, such as the use of medications that may have troubling side effects.
Clients may feel tired, sad, spacey, headachy, agitated, or irritable after training. These feelings often pass within 24 hours after a training session. If not, training with another protocol or reduced duration of training in the following session will often remedy the discomfort.
If you experience any unwanted side effects, let me know right away during a session. We may want to make an adjustment to make you more comfortable. Neurofeedback is strongly oriented to your preferences and places great trust in your inner wisdom. Listen to yourself and tell me what is happening. There is no danger in stopping at any time.
None of my clients have ever reported any long term, adverse side effects.
POTENTIAL BENEFITS?
Neurofeedback training improves the ability to focus and shift into appropriate states of attention. The enhanced performance profoundly and positively affects self esteem, school grades and family and social interactions.
Potential benefits may include:
WHAT IF I AM TAKING MEDICATIONS?
If you are taking medication for any of the following problems (diabetes, thyroid, migraines, headaches, seizures, emotions, thinking, perception, hyperactivity, attention, movement, spasticity, or for low or high blood pressure) it is important to stay in close communication with your physician. It has been observed that the need for these medications often decreases after numerous biofeedback training sessions. I strongly suggest that all changes of medication be done with the consultation of your physician. To decrease or stop taking some medications may be detrimental to your health.
